Sahih al-Bukhari 3692

It is related that al-Miswar ibn Makhrama said, "When 'Umar was stabbed, be began to show pain and so Ibn 'Abbas said to him, as if he was trying to assuage his disquiet, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin! If this has happened, you still kept the company of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and were a good companion, and then you parted from him while he was pleased with you. Then you kept the company of Abu Bakr and were a good companion and you parted from him while he was pleased with you. Then you kept their [the Muslims'] company and were a good companion. If you part from them, you will part from them while they are pleased with you.' He said, 'As for what you mentioned about the company and pleasure of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that is a favour from Allah, may His mention be exalted!, which He bestowed on me. As for what you mentioned about the company and pleasure of Abu Bakr, that is a favour from Allah Almighty which He bestowed on me. As for what you see of my disquiet, it is on your account and on account of your companions. By Allah, if I were to have gold enough to fill the earth, I would ransom myself with it from the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic ,before I see Him.'" This is related from Ibn 'Abbas, "I visited 'Umar."

As-Salt ibn Muhammad related to us: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim related to us: Ayyub related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abi Mulaykah, on the authority of al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said: When ‘Umar was stabbed he suffered much; so Ibn ‘Abbas said, as if consoling him: O Commander of the Faithful! Even if this be so—verily, thou wert a companion of the Messenger of Allah and didst well in his companionship; and he remained even pleased with thee till ye were separated. Thereafter thou wert a companion of Abu Bakr and didst well in his companionship; and he remained even pleased with thee till ye separated. Then thou wert a companion of their companions and didst well in their companionship; and if indeed thou art to leave them, they will remain pleased with thee.— [‘Umar] said: As to what thou hast mentioned about [my] companionship with the Messenger of Allah and his pleasure [with me], behold, that was a favour which Allah, exalted be He, hath bestowed upon me. And as to what thou hast mentioned about [my] companionship with Abu Bakr and his pleasure [with me], behold, that was a favour which Allah, glorified His name, hath bestowed upon me. And as to this grief in which thou seest me, this is [but] for thine and thy companions‘ sake. By Allah, had I much gold as might fill the earth, I would offer it as ransom from the wrath of Allah, the lord of Might and Glory, ere I meet Him. Hammad ibn Zayd said: Ayyub related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abi Mulaykah, on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas: “I went in unto ‘Umar”—[and the rest] the same [as above]
