Narrated Anas:When the news of the arrival of the Prophet (ﷺ) at Medina reached `Abdullah bin Salam, he went to him to ask him about certain things, He said, "I am going to ask you about three things which only a Prophet can answer: What is the first sign of The Hour? What is the first food which the people of Paradise will eat? Why does a child attract the similarity to his father or to his mother?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Gabriel has just now informed me of that." Ibn Salam said, "He (i.e. Gabriel) is the enemy of the Jews amongst the angels. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "As for the first sign of The Hour, it will be a fire that will collect the people from the East to the West. As for the first meal which the people of Paradise will eat, it will be the caudate (extra) lobe of the fish-liver. As for the child, if the man's discharge proceeds the woman's discharge, the child attracts the similarity to the man, and if the woman's discharge proceeds the man's, then the child attracts the similarity to the woman." On this, `Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah." and added, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Jews invent such lies as make one astonished, so please ask them about me before they know about my conversion to I slam . " The Jews came, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What kind of man is `Abdullah bin Salam among you?" They replied, "The best of us and the son of the best of us and the most superior among us, and the son of the most superior among us. "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam should embrace Islam?" They said, "May Allah protect him from that." The Prophet (ﷺ) repeated his question and they gave the same answer. Then `Abdullah came out to them and said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!" On this, the Jews said, "He is the most wicked among us and the son of the most wicked among us." So they degraded him. On this, he (i.e. `Abdullah bin Salam) said, "It is this that I was afraid of, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).

And for what reason does a child resemble his father and for what reason does he resemble his maternal uncles?' He said, 'Jibril has just informed me about them.�'Ibn Salam said, 'That is the enemy of the Jews among the angels.' He said, "The first sign of the Final Hour will be a fire which will gather people from the east to the west. The first food that the people of the Garden will eat will be the extra bit of the liver of the fish. As for the child�s resemblance, when the man has intercourse with the woman and his discharge is first, it will resemble him. If she has a discharge first, then it will resemble her.' He said, 'I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' Then he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a calumnious people.'. The Jews came and Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What kind of man is 'Abdullah ibn Salam among you?' They said, 'The most knowledgeable of us, and the son of the most knowledgeable of us, and the best of us and the son of the best of us.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What would you think if 'Abdullah ibn Salam were to become Muslim?' They said, 'We seek refuge with Allah from that!' He repeated that to them and they said something similar. 'Abdullah came out to them and said, 'I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' They said, 'The worst of us and the son of the worst of us,' and began to disparage him. He said, 'This is what I feared, Messenger of Allah.'"

Hamid ibn ‘Umar related to me, on the authority of Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal, who said: Humayd related to us: Anas related to us:
‘Abd Allah ibn Salam learned of the Prophet’s arrival at Madinah; he thereupon went to him and asked him about certain things, saying: Behold, I am going to ask thee about three things which none but a prophet knoweth: What will be the first sign of the Last Hour? What is the first food the inmates of Paradise will eat? How doth it come about that a child taketh after his father or after his mother?
The Prophet answered: Just now Gabriel hath informed me about all this.
Ibn Salam exclaimed: He is, of all angels, the enemy of the Jews!
The Prophet continued: As to the first sign of the Last Hour, it will be a fire that will drive the people from the East toward the West. As to the first food the inmates of Paradise will eat, it will be the caul of the fish-liver.
As to the child, this is so: when the man’s fluid prevaileth upon the woman’s fluid, it is he after whom the child will take; and when the woman’s fluid prevaileth upon the man’s fluid, it is she after whom the child will take.
Thereupon Ibn Salam said: I do bear witness that there is no deity save God, and that thou art God’s Apostle!
And he added: O Apostle of God! Behold, the Jews are great calumniators; ask them, then, about me ere they become aware of my conversion to Islam.
And the Jews came, and the Prophet said: What kind of man is ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam among you?
They answered: The best of us and the son of the best of us, as well as the most erudite and the son of the most erudite among us.
The Prophet asked: What would ye think if he accepted Islam?
They exclaimed: May God protect him from such a thing!
The Prophet repeated his question, but they gave the same answer. Then ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam shewed himself unto them and said: I bear witness that there is no deity save God, and that Muhammad is God’s Apostle!
The Jews cried out: He is the worst and the son of the worst among us!
And they gave him bad names. He then said: It is this that I was afraid of, O Apostle of God!
